Born July 12, 1863 in Keokuk, Iowa, Francis graduated from the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University. He served as a Stage Set and Theatrical Designer for Gates and Morange Studios in New York City. He died on December 18, 1952, in Bronxville, New York.
Francis occasionally signed his paintings "F.E. Gates."
Born June 25, 1872 in St. Louis, Missouri, Richard graduated from the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University. He served as a Stage Set and Theatrical Designer for Gates and Morange Studios in New York City. He died on September 16, 1964, in Newport, Vermont.
This collection represents over 30 years' work between 2 brothers, Francis Edgar "F.E." Gates and Richard Henry Gates. With a focus on earthly elements and skillful use of natural colors, the brothers created an impressive library of beautiful and varied artwork.
The brothers' work was not isolated to paintings. The brothers also made signficant contributions to the theatre through set design. With memberships in prominent organizations and work featured in museums and highlighted in several publications, Richard and Francis were constantly creating.
